In late February 2018 the U.K. was hit with blizzards and freezing conditions in what was coined the ‘Beast from the East’.

The blizzard created a peculiar sensation. Virtually all awareness of the city of London disappeared. Buildings evaporated away behind the falling snow. The sounds of the city muffled to near silence. Only a few individuals appeared briefly, before fading back into the blizzard. While a sense of the city diminished, an attentiveness to these individuals grew.

In a city of millions, it can be hard to find a purpose and place. We can be physically, but also metaphorically, ‘out alone in the cold’. Many stand up to the challenge, allowing their individuality to thrive. Others struggle to find an identity, becoming lost and overwhelmed. Although exceedingly difficult to identify, through greater awareness of the individuals around us, we may be able to recognise those in need and take the first steps in providing support.
